Celeste & Jesse Forever

Friday & Saturday 7 pm; 8:45 pm
Sunday 5 pm

Celeste (Rashida Jones) and Jesse (Andy Samberg) met in high school, married young and are growing apart. Now thirty, Celeste is the driven owner of her own media consulting firm, Jesse is once again unemployed and in no particular rush to do anything with his life. Celeste is convinced that divorcing Jesse is the right thing to do — she is on her way up, he is on his way nowhere, and if they do it now instead of later, they can remain supportive friends. Jesse passively accepts this transition into friendship, even though he is still in love with her. As the reality of their separation sets in, Celeste slowly and painfully realizes she has been cavalier about their relationship, and her decision, which once seemed mature and progressive, now seems impulsive and selfish. But her timing with Jesse is less than fortuitous. While navigating the turbulent changes in their lives and in their hearts, these two learn that in order to truly love someone, you may have to let them go.

Compliance

Friday 7 pm & 8:40 pm
Saturday 8:20 pm

Based on true events, Compliance tells the chilling story of just how far one might go to obey a figure of authority. On a particularly busy day at a suburban fast food joint, high-strung manager Sandra (Ann Dowd) receives a phone call from a police officer saying that an employee, a pretty young blonde named Becky (Dreama Walker) has stolen money from a customer. Convinced she’s only doing what’s right, Sandra commences the investigation, following step-by-step instructions from the caller at the other end of the line, no matter how invasive they become. As we watch, we ask ourselves two questions: “Why doesn’t she just say no?” and the more troubling, “Am I certain I wouldn’t do the same?” Writer/director Craig Zobel (Great World of Sound) recounts this riveting nightmare in which the line between legality and reason is hauntingly blurred. The cast delivers startlingly authentic performances that make the appalling events unfolding onscreen all the more difficult to watch—but impossible to turn away from. Delving into the complex psychology of this real-life story, Compliance proves that sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction.

Saturday 7 pm – 8:20 pm
Sunday 5 pm – 6:20 pm

HALLOWEENVILLE is a documentary about Halloween in Lambertville, NJ, a holiday which brings out the spooktacularly-creative side of this already-artsy town. It must be seen to be believed: haunted houses, hundreds of costumed people in the streets at night, horrific lawn performances, and thousands of pounds of candy dolled out by residents to terrifying children, young and old. ACME is honored to have this film return to our theater just before Halloween!
