Chely Wright: Wish Me Away & A Dramatic Reading, The Temperamentals, Plus Discussion

Sunday, Film: 5pm
Sunday, Dramatic Reading & Discussion: 7 pm

GAY PRIDE WEEKEND, Friday-Sunday, May 18th-20th

Co-Presented with:

CHELY WRIGHT: WISH ME AWAY After a lifetime of hiding, Chely Wright becomes the first commercial country music singer to come out as gay, shattering cultural stereotypes within Nashville, per conservative heartland family and, most importantly, within herself. With unprecedented access over a two-year period, including her private video diaries, the film layers Chely’s rise to fame while hiding in the late 90′s with the execution of her coming out plan, culminating in the exciting moment when she steps into the media glare to reveal she is gay. The film shows both the devastation of internalized homophobia and the transformational power of living an authentic life. The film also documents the conflicting responses from Nashville, the heartland and the LGBT community as Chely Wright prepares for an unknown future.

Rated NR; 120 minutes

Dramatic Reading: Selections from The Temperamentals, by Alliance Repertory Theatre Company. The Temperamentals garnered rave reviews in NYC and received Best Play nominations from both the Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle for 2010. ” Temperamental ” was code for ” homosexual ” in the early 1950?s, part of a created language of secret words that gay men used to communicate. THE TEMPERAMENTALS tells the story of two men – the communist Harry Hay and the Viennese refugee and designer Rudi Gernreich – as they fall in love while building the first gay rights organization in the pre-Stonewall United States, The Mattachine Society. Reading will be followed by discussion with the Director, David Christopher and cast.
