Should major business organizations, such as tobacco companies and fast-food companies, have moral and social responsibilities to the public in what they produce, sell, and how they market? This evening’s program will explore this question.

ADDICTION INCORPORATED is the true story of Victor DeNoble, one of the most important and influential whistle-blowers of all time… In the 1980s, DeNoble was a research scientist at a major tobacco company, where he proved something that the industry had been denying for years: that cigarettes were addictive. In a true act of modern-day heroism, DeNoble took his findings to the people despite a strict confidentiality agreement, eventually testifying about his research in the infamous 1994 Congressional hearings with the seven heads of the major tobacco companies. ADDICTION INCORPORATED is a story of one man risking everything to make a difference, shaking up a powerful industry and saving countless lives along the way.

Dan Zegart is the critically acclaimed author of Civil Warriors: The Legal Siege on the Tobacco Industry and a featured expert in ADDICTION INCORPORATED. Zegart’s journalism has been featured in The New York Times, Ms., Playboy and The Nation. He has also written, reported or produced for PBS’s “Frontline,” ABC News “20/20,” and the ABC “Directions” documentary series.

“[If] the reader is looking for a highly readable overview of the sprawling tobacco litigation, told briskly, comprehensively and comprehensibly by an excellent storyteller, then Civil Warriors is a good pick.”
The New York Times Book Review

Civil Warriors:  A landmark narrative of an epic legal battle, Civil Warriors is the true account of how one tenacious lawyer led the charge against the titans of the tobacco industry. Investigative journalist Dan Zegart draws on five years of eyewitness reporting, thousands of pages of internal documents, and riveting firsthand stories of plaintiffs, lawyers, jurors, and scientists, to paint a compelling portrait of just what it took to get the unprecedented judgment against Big Tobacco-a ruling that remains one of the most controversial in the history of the U.S. court system.

Pina

“Dance, dance, or we are lost.” Pina Bausch’s final words summarize her life and provide the inspiration for acclaimed director Wim Wenders’ (WINGS OF DESIRE, BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB) breathtaking tribute to the legendary choreographer. Bausch and her Tanztheater Wuppertal elevated dance into brilliantly subversive new expressive realms, and in this exhilarating film Wenders captures the raw, heart-stopping intensity of the movement and transforms it into a transcendent cinematic experience. An official selection of the Berlinale, Telluride, Toronto and New York film festivals, and now Germany’s official entry for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, PINA features interviews with and performances by Bausch’s beloved original company members, and offers an indelible image of an artist who went the full distance in her uncommonly rich creative life.
